About JustCookIt
A University of Edinburgh Honours Project
What is JustCookIt?
JustCookIt helps you discover recipes that fit your time, budget, and dietary needs — whether you're cooking for one or a family of five. Search curated recipes from BBC Good Food and Tasty, filter by cooking time, dietary requirements, and cuisine, and see estimated costs per serving so you always know what you're spending.
Signed-in users can also submit their own recipes to share with the community, save favourite recipes to their profile, and find nearby supermarkets stocking each recipe's ingredients.
The Research Behind It
JustCookIt originated as a University of Edinburgh honours-level dissertation project titled "Designing and Implementing a Personalized Food Recipe Platform for University Students using Web Data Extraction". The dissertation explored using web data extraction techniques to build an initial version of an online food recipe website targeted for university students to make cooking easier for themselves.
The platform has since grown beyond its academic roots into a publicly available recipe discovery tool for anyone who wants to cook well without overcomplicating it. For further information:
Who built it?
JustCookIt was built by Justin Howe, a University of Edinburgh graduate, as an honours project. The goal: make recipe discovery genuinely useful for people who care about time and money, not just what looks good in a photo.
